After several months of fundraising, we’re closing in on our final few weeks! We have until June 30, 2013 to raise the total amount of funds we need to completely fix/change our windows at The Commons (formerly the First Unitarian Universalist Church of Detroit)!

The total amount we need is $10,000—and as of today, we have raised $4866!!! That is almost half of what we need, which means that raising the other half of what we need is ENTIRELY doable (please note the current total on our fundraising page has not been updated yet, as several donations have been made offline).

Why are we fundraising to fix our windows? Well, besides the fact that they are ancient, there is also the fact that because they are ancient, they create a horrible problem with our heating/cooling bill. Our single biggest cost as an organization is heating/cooling. If we can fix it so that our windows actually do their job (No more wearing jackets while we work! No more cherry red sweaty faces and heat stroke in the summer!) —our organization and our building will be much much less vulnerable as a whole.

But not just our organization—our entire community. All the different partners at The Commons, including the Unitarian Universalist Church that still congregates every Sunday, The People’s Kitchen Detroit, that teaches all of us the joy and resiliency of creating your own justice oriented meals, Fender Bender,  bicycle education and training program by and for self-identified women, transgendered individuals, and members of the genderqueer community, and 5e Gallery, Detroit’s foremost Hip-Hop based art gallery and live music performance space, will ALL benefit from the new windows your donation will help install!

ALL of these organizations (and more!) help make up The Commons community, along with East Michigan Environmental Action Council. We all share the space that was so generously and in such a justice centered way donated to EMEAC.

Your donation makes it possible to keep all of these organizations and this fabulous and integral community safe, comfortable and much less vulnerable in an area currently trying to survive heavy gentrification.

Please donate if you can—and please please pass the word along! We have 20 days left to raise the final $5000. WE CAN DO THIS!

Thank you so much!!! :D

BLACK HISTORY (Day 4): Often time women, especially black women, are placed last in our minds when it comes to making history. We all know about the famous Tuskegee Airmen, but have you ever thought about women being pilots in those times as well? Start thinking and do your research on these extraordinary women. Today we honor the often overlooked Tuskegee Airwomen.

I want you to keep this two-page story by Matt Wayne, John Paul Leon, Noelle Giddings, and Dave Sharpe in mind this month. I want you to think of this every time someone — anyone, myself included — invokes Dwayne McDuffie’s name.

I want you to think about what they have to gain when they say the man’s name.

Always reblog this when I see it pop up on here.
